Obtaining tax identification numbers

Federal employer identification number (EIN) You need to obtain an EIN from the IRS. The easiest way to do this would be to go to irs.gov and follow their instructions.
Local identification numbers.

Local requirements will vary depending on local laws and regulations.

For Colorado, the typical entity will need to obtain the following tax ID numbers for different purposes. At the state and county levels, the entity may be required to obtain a tax ID number for one or several of the following purposes.

  • State and/or county sales tax (or county sales tax may be separate)
  • State and/or county use tax
  • State income withholding tax, for withholding of income tax on employees’ paychecks
  • State unemployment tax ID number and associated rate

At the city or local levels, the entity may be required to obtain a tax ID number for one or several of the following purposes.

  • City sales tax
  • City use tax
